Heddle Partners with the Mi’Kmaw Economic Benefits Office
Sydney NS, July 6 2017 . Heddle Marine is proud to announce the formation of a recent partnership with the Mi’Kmaw Economic Benefits Office or MEBO. Mike Moore, the Regional Manager of Heddle Marine East, is the driving force behind this alliance. He has been working closely with MEBO’s Executive Director Alex Paul, and Owen Fitzgerald who is the Director of Industry and Government Engagement at MEBO. Currently Heddle has seven local Aboriginal employees to service the eight vessels and other projects at their Sydport facility located in Edwardsville, Nova Scotia. The workers are mostly welders, fabricators and laborers
” Our company is growing and with the help of MEBO we are able to hire dedicated, skilled, reliable local Aboriginal workers. They work hard and we are here to help them advance through their apprenticeships and training. We are looking forward to expanding our team, ” said Mike. Alex Paul has noted that Heddle Marine is a welcomed company on the East Coast. “We have worked closely with Mike Moore of Heddle. He has a great reputation and we recognize his commitment to building a strong team for Heddle. Success comes from building a diverse workforce within a community and it can be good for the economy especially here in Nova Scotia.”
Owen Fitzgerald also commented that, “We see our harbour, Sydney Harbour, as one of our greatest economic assets, which has the potential to create great opportunities. Heddle Marine is recognizing this opportunity and we are seeing the results and it is great to see local Aboriginals participating and working with Heddle Marine.”
MEBO’s mission is to develop partnerships with large scale industries across Nova Scotia and to identify business employment opportunities for local Aboriginals of the five First Nations communities. Their approach is to help guide workers through their apprenticeships on their way to becoming advanced, skilled and certified employees
